Central to the Fuelpath programme, SAFED training delivers three important benefits. First, quick and substantial cost savings can be realised through reduced fuel consumption. In fact, average savings documented during SAFED for Vans training courses mean that by simply changing the way your drivers drive, you could reduce your fuel bill by 16%.
Second, in addition to fuel savings and related CO2 reductions, more efficient driving reduces the costs associated with maintaining your fleet. Reduced braking and gear changing help to lower maintenance costs, planned and unplanned, improve vehicle utilisation and protect resale values.
Third, safer driving means lower accident rates and the significant costs that they bring, to your bottom line and your brand.
Funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) and managed by AEA, the SAFED (Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving) programmes are aimed at improving the driving techniques of van and truck drivers, to reduce environmental impacts and encourage safer driving on the road.
Since its inception in 2002, over 23,000 commercial drivers have been trained. In this time, SAFED has helped DfT improve the UK’s environmental track record in a way that has simultaneously delivered sizeable commercial benefits to industry.
Driver training alone can produce significant results, but to really lock-in these benefits for the long term requires the managed development of a culture of efficiency. AEA has a long track record of managing organisational behaviour change. Through Fuelpath, we will work with key staff members, designing initiatives that will ensure every one of your drivers is motivated and committed to ongoing cost savings.
We will help you analyse not just how much fuel you use, but whether it’s the right fuel for the job, and if it will continue to be right as your business, and costs, evolve. We will help you design a strategy that responds to the type of driving your drivers do and the vehicles they use, and assess opportunities for adopting other fuels or other fuel sources.
AEA is a key advisor to the DfT and Transport for London on the latest vehicle and fuel technologies. We bring this experience to you in the form of a vehicle technology review which assesses the opportunities that technology offers you. This includes not only the latest vehicles but also other technologies - such as low-rolling resistance tyres, tyre pressure monitoring, aerodynamics, telematics and navigation systems.
As one of Europe’s leading consultancies on environmental regulations, we will use our knowledge to assess how regulatory changes will effect your fleet’s operations. We will also provide horizon scanning to assess your medium and long-term opportunities and threats.
Good monitoring systems are at the heart of good management. AEA has been central in Government’s efforts to compile and disseminate best practice in this field for over a decade. Whatever the starting point, we will work with your managers to ensure that your systems reflect best practice in monitoring individual drivers and overall fleet performance. These systems will underpin all other parts of the Fuelpath programme, allowing you to create continuous year-on-year improvements against your key targets.
