AEA validates the first CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme Performance League Table

AEA conducted an independent validation for the Environment Agency of the first CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme Performance League Table published on Tuesday 8th November 2011.

The table ranks more than 2000 organisations in a single list according to what they have done to measure energy use as preparation for taking part in the scheme. Participants include large businesses as well as government departments and local authorities.

AEA was asked to conduct a validation of the league table generated by the Environment Agency’s online registry system following the submission of the first set of annual reports by scheme participants in July.

The table ranks organisations on the steps they have taken to install smart meters (AMR) and gain accreditation under an emissions reduction standard, such as the Carbon Trust Standard, or recognised equivalent accreditation scheme.

“We undertook a validation of both the registry-determined rankings, using an independent calculator developed by AEA, and the Agency’s procedures for assuring the accuracy of the league table,” explains AEA consultant Richard Eaton.

“It will be the first time that many organisations have been directly compared with their competitors or peers in relation to their carbon performance. While the results show a strong performance by some organisations, it also indicates that many would benefit considerably from further monitoring and management of their greenhouse gas emissions.”

From 2012 organisations’ rank will reflect changes in carbon emissions year on year – both in absolute terms and taking the growth of an organisation into account. It means the rankings will increasingly become a public statement on participants’ energy efficiency, giving them an added incentive to cut emissions.

As well as working with the Environment Agency as it administers the CRC scheme in the UK, AEA continues to help other customers meet the compliance requirements of the scheme by providing CRC audits, comprehensive CRC reporting support and strategic advice around the proposed simplification of CRC.
